The 40-foot container (also known as a 40ft container or 2 TEU – Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) is an international standard container for transporting large quantities of goods. With an external length of approximately 12.19 m, a width of 2.44 m, and a height of 2.59 m (standard version), it offers a cargo volume of approximately 67 m³ – twice that of a 20ft container, with only a slightly higher deadweight.
The 40ft container is usually made of robust steel and is windproof and waterproof, stackable, and lockable. It is ideal for intermodal transport by ship, rail, and truck. In addition to the standard version, there are variants such as the 40ft High Cube (with 30 cm of additional interior height) for particularly bulky cargo.
Typical applications include the transport of palletized goods, machinery, textiles, or furniture, as well as use as a storage or mobile space solution. The 40-foot container is an indispensable part of global logistics.
