Before the proliferation of modern minivans, ambulances typically had station wagon bodies based on passenger cars. Toyota ambulances, in particular, retain the image of the Crown passenger car, but feature a significantly larger body to provide the space required for emergency response. They are also equipped with a 3900 cc six-cylinder engine, typical of large vehicles, which improves their performance.
The Toyota ambulance, whose hood design is reminiscent of the Crown (also known at various times as the Metropolitan model), was produced in three generations until around 1971. All models featured an appealing, flowing style that made optimal use of the body's size. The last model, the FS55V, was particularly well-known.
