The Lexus LS400 was introduced in 1989 as the flagship model of the newly founded luxury brand Lexus for foreign markets. Its quiet interior and precise workmanship had a significant global impact on the development of luxury vehicles.

In 1995, the switch was made to the second generation, the 20 series, which retained many of the characteristics of the first generation while being further developed through improvements such as more space for rear passengers and weight reduction.

The 1998 model year brought a comprehensive redesign of the front end, as well as performance enhancements, including improved engine power and a 5-speed automatic transmission.
