The history of the rotary engine, which had temporarily stalled with the end of production of the RX-7, continued in 2003 with the release of the RX-8. Although a four-door, four-seat car, the compact rotary engine was essential to embodying Mazda's vision of a sports car. Retaining the image of previous Mazda sports cars while adapting it for the 21st century, the RX-8 underwent significant interior and exterior design changes in 2008 and remained in production until 2012. It is considered the last rotary-engined sports car to date.
