Launched in 1999, the 170-series Crown was a hot topic because it was split into two series: the luxurious Royal and the performance-oriented Athlete. For the first time in a long time, it featured a window-frame sedan body. And the station wagon model, which had been in continuous production since the 130-series release in 1987, was finally redesigned under the Estate name. The 170-series was the last Crown passenger car to feature an inline-six engine and has recently attracted attention as a Crown that still retained a touch of the 20th century, even before the major changes brought by the subsequent 180-series.
