The third generation of the Skyline, called "Hakosuka", was launched in 1968, followed by a two-door hardtop in the autumn of 1970. The wheelbase was shortened by 70 mm compared to the four-door sedan of its predecessor, which was supposedly to improve cornering performance in races, but also significantly improved the design. In particular, the long-running 2000GT series helped to improve the overall image of the Skyline, and sales figures, which had already risen thanks to the "Love Skyline" advertising campaign, continued to grow.
